How to Improve Brand Visibility in ChatGPT and AI Search

Summary

Brand visibility in AI search improves in a fixed order: establish a baseline with a repeatable prompt set, remove crawler and rendering blocks, make the brand entity consistent across the web, add direct-answer passages to the pages that matter, publish evidence such as case studies and original research, earn independent corroboration, then re-measure monthly. Each step is verifiable without special tools.

This is the checklist we use on our own site and in client programs. It is ordered deliberately: the early steps are cheap and remove the reasons an engine cannot cite you; the later steps are slower and give it reasons to. Skipping ahead to content while a firewall blocks the crawler is the most common way to waste a quarter.

Step 1: measure before you change anything

Write down thirty to fifty prompts in three groups. Brand: your name, your name plus “agency”, your name plus country. Commercial: the category phrases a buyer would type (“best AI agency Tallinn”, “GEO agency Estonia”). Conversational: the way people actually ask an assistant (“which agency in Tallinn can build an AI product for my company?”). Run every prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. For each, record whether you are mentioned, whether your site is cited, your position among the recommendations, which competitors appear, and the URL the engine cites.

Do this by hand the first time. It takes an afternoon, it teaches you how each engine behaves in your category, and it produces the baseline every later month is compared against. Our prompt set and scoring sheet are published in the AI Search Lab.

Step 2: open the doors

  • Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and CCBot. Decide deliberately; allow what you want cited.
  • Check your CDN or firewall bot-management settings. Many block “AI crawlers” as a preset category without telling you.
  • Fetch your key pages with a plain HTTP client and read the HTML. If the service descriptions, the intro or the Q&A are missing because they load via JavaScript, move them into server-rendered HTML.
  • Add a Content-Signal line to robots.txt so your intent for search, AI input and AI training is explicit.
  • Set up IndexNow so Bing, Copilot and partner engines learn about changes immediately. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and turn on the AI Performance report.

Verify it

Run `curl -A "OAI-SearchBot" https://yourdomain/your-page` and search the output for a sentence from your service description. If it is not there, no crawler that skips JavaScript will ever see it.

Step 3: make the entity unambiguous

Pick the canonical spelling of the brand, the legal entity name, and the public address. Use them identically on the website, in Organization structured data, on LinkedIn, in Google Business Profile, in Crunchbase and in every directory. Declare accepted variants as alternateName in structured data rather than using them interchangeably.

Connect the structured data. Organization, WebSite, the founder as Person, each Service and each Article should reference each other by @id so a crawler reads one graph instead of scattered snippets. Include only verified facts: no ratings you do not have, no partner badges you did not earn, no founding date you are unsure of. Fabricated schema is worse than none, because it contradicts the rest of the web.

Step 4: write passages an engine can lift

For each page that should answer a commercial question, write a direct answer of forty to eighty words directly under the H1: who you are, where you are, what you do, for whom. Make it self-contained; a reader who sees only that paragraph should understand the page. Then give the rest of the page descriptive headings (“Problems we solve”, “Real projects”, “How the process works”) so retrieval finds the right passage for the right question.

One page per real intent. “AI agency in Tallinn” and “AI marketing agency in Estonia” are different questions with different buyers; they deserve different pages with different evidence. Five near-identical pages with the city swapped are noise to a model and a cannibalisation problem for search.

Step 5: publish evidence

Turn portfolio tiles into case studies: context, challenge, approach, what you actually did, what it runs on, the outcome, and what it taught you. Use real numbers only where you can stand behind them; qualitative outcomes are better than invented percentages. Give the founder or lead practitioner a profile page that connects them to the company and to their expertise, with links to real public profiles.

Then add a small amount of content nobody else can publish: a benchmark you ran, an experiment with before-and-after data, an engineering write-up of how your site is built. This is the material answer engines cite, because it is specific, dated and unique. It is also the material that gets you invited to podcasts and directories, which is step 6.

Step 6: get corroborated

  • Claim and complete profiles on the agency directories relevant to your market (Clutch, GoodFirms, DesignRush, Sortlist) and the general ones (Crunchbase, LinkedIn Company). Same name, address, description everywhere.
  • Ask real partners and clients to reference the relationship on their own sites: a “digital partner” line, a joint case study, a testimonial with a name behind it.
  • Local and national business registries and directories in your country. In Estonia, the public business register already confirms the legal entity; make sure the website matches it.
  • Interviews, podcasts and guest articles where you say the same facts about the company in your own words.

Do not buy links or reviews. Engines that summarise the web are, in our observation, better at discounting manufactured signals than classic ranking systems were, and the entity damage from contradictory or fake sources is hard to undo.

Step 7: measure again, every month

Run the same prompt set on the same engines and compare with the baseline. Watch the cited URL column most closely: when an engine starts citing your case study instead of a directory, step 5 worked; when it names you without citing you, step 6 is still incomplete. Pair the manual benchmark with Search Console, Bing AI Performance and GA4 referral data from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com so the qualitative picture and the traffic agree.

What to expect

Technical fixes are reflected within weeks. Entity consistency takes a few months to propagate through directories and caches. Citation behaviour changes as evidence and corroboration accumulate, and it can move backwards when an engine changes its retrieval. Nobody can promise a placement, and the honest goal is a rising mention and citation rate over a year, documented month by month. Paid placement is a separate lever with its own rules: see ChatGPT ads vs organic visibility.

If you would rather have the baseline and the technical steps done for you, that is our AI search optimization audit. The content, evidence and corroboration steps are the GEO program.
